Crowdfunding: 5 Reasons Your Region May Be Ineligible
by Admin / Dec 19, 2024
Crowdfunding is undoubtedly one of the easiest and fastest ways to raise large funding for your business or personal projects globally but despite this ease of access to good funding, you may not be qualified to enjoy this based on your geographical region. Read reasons and what to do (solutions) below.
This could happen if your region or country is restricted by the crowdfunding platform for some reason. If you are in such shoes, then please read on for a way out.
Below, we are going to take a look at 5 reasons that could warrant a region related restriction on your crowdfunding membership account. Here we go.
Challenges
1. Conflict of Internal & Partner Policies
A good number of popular crowdfunding platforms have operational in-house policies that determine what regions of the world are eligible for membership and hence crowdfunding benefits on the platform.
In certain cases, these restrictions may be based on the binding operating terms and agreements between them and their service partners, such as a payment gateway serving the platform.
Sometimes, the platform has simple and welcoming policies that embrace platform memberships from almost all regions but welcoming as these may be, the policies may be hampered by the overshadowing and stricter effect of external or 3rd party policies by their business partners.
2. Fiat Currencies
Another reason why your region or country may be restricted could be based on the policies of either of or both governments of the originating and destination countries regarding funds movements. If your donors will be paying in certain fiat currencies (Regular paper money), then, the policies of the government regarding financial transactions in that currency shall hold sway. The same goes for government policies regarding the currency you will be receiving the funds in when the platforms pays you at the end of the campaign. As far as legal requirements and government policies are concerned, movements of fiat currencies around the world are always under strict regulations and heavy restrictions.
3. Anti Money Laundering Laws
This is yet another reason your region may be marked as restricted if it is on record that there has been a lot of financial irregularities, fraud and large scale money laundering or illegal movement of large sums of money through unofficial channels in that region.
For this purpose, and for compliance reasons, the platform may restrict that region from participation and use of the service unless special AML registration and verification has been passed successfully.
4. KYC Requirements
Most crowdfunding platforms require government issued ID’s to verify the identity of their members in a bid to keep in line with legal requirements compliance in their operating country. This in itself is not a basis for having your region restricted. However, if part of the KYC requirements involve submission of your Social Security Number (SSN) or National ID number, any interested new member whose country does not or has not started issuing such IDs as these will not be able to participate, hence an indirect restriction owing to those required IDs not being available in their region.
5. Payment Method Incompatibilities
On some platforms, available payment methods may not be compatible with what obtains in your region. If this is the case, you will have to find an alternative payment method. However, if this is not possible, then your region becomes indirectly restricted. A good example is Paypal payments. While some countries can pay and be paid in Paypal, others may only pay out but can not receive Paypal payments in return. In this case, if the only payment method the crowdfunding platform supports is Paypal, just take a walk.
If you are caught up in the web of any or all of the above forms of restrictions based on your region, do not loose a sweat yet. Here are 5 simple ways out.
